About this event
This is a multi day paddle.
We will be leaving at 8 AM from Washington Park in Anacortes, Rosario Straight to James island, continuing North on the West side of Blakely Island and the east side of Orcas Island
Toilets available at Washington Park, pit toilets at each camp site.
Skill level: Level III.
Route: Sunday August 17, leave Washington Park by 8:00 AM for a maximum 1 kt current crossing Rosario Straight to the North end of James Island, through Thatcher Pass, up the West side of Blakely Island, around Deer Point and North to Doe Island State Park for the night. (about 13 nm)
Monday August 18, leave Doe Island State Park by 8 AM to minimize the current when crossing between Orcas and Sucia Islands later in the day. Paddle following the Orcas Island shoreline North East around Lawrence Point then North West to the North end of Orcas Island, finally crossing to one of the campgrounds on Sucia Island for two nights. (12.5 to 14.5 nm)
Tuesday August 19, optional day paddle around Sucia and Patos Islands. (about 13 nm)
Wednesday August 20, leave by 8:30 AM crossing to Matia Island then to Barnes and Clark Islands, South to Orcas where we follow the shoreline around Lawrence Point and South West back to Doe Island State Park for the night. (about 13.5 nm)
Thursday August 21, leave by 8:00 AM and retracing the route from the first day. Currents will be over 3 nm going with us in the morning and reducing so that when crossing Rosario Straight back to Washington park we should be near slack. (about 13 nm)
It is very important to leave each day by the listed times to minimize currents when making crossings and/or minimize the time paddling against opposing currents.
Trip cost:
$9 per night for parking in Lot B at Washington Park
$12 per night camping fee for the group at Doe Island
$12 per night camping fee for the group at Sucia Island
