Summary:
This four-day paddle trip will provide an opportunity to explore and camp in a remote area that is close to home.
10-14 NM per day, about 40 NM for the entire trip
Pace: Moderate (2.5-3 kts)
SKIII
Participants must be able to paddle 14 NM a day. Trip Leader reserves the right to assess skills in order to determine eligibility to join this trip.
WAKE trips require a 14’ or larger kayak with bulkheads, PFD, and dry suit (or wetsuit).
Float Plan:
Day 1- September 2: Optional, drive to and camp at Newhalem Creek Campground. We have reserved Group Camp Site “A”.
Day 2 - September 3: Launch from Colonial Creek boat launch by 9:00 am. Paddle across Diablo Lake and catch the Ross Lake shuttle truck. Shuttle between lakes. Paddle to Cat Island and camp (two nights). ~14 NM
Day 3 - September 4: Optional day paddle / hike (Little Beaver, Silver Creek) ~6-11 NM (depending on destination).
Day 4 - September 5: Paddle to Big Beaver and camp. ~8 NM
Day 5 - September 6: Paddle to shuttle truck pick up location. Shuttle between lakes. Paddle across Diablo Lake to Colonial Creek boat launch ~7 NM
Possible hazardous conditions:
WIND IN THE AFTERNOON FROM THE SOUTH
Ross lake is a mountainous canyon with 20+ miles fetch. Participants must be able to paddle into wind, with wind, across wind. Skill level lll. They don't call Diablo Lake the Devil Lake for nothing. Or it could be totally calm.
Facilities:
Newhalem Creek Campground has flush toilets, drinking water, etc.
All Ross Lake campsites are equipped with fire-rings (North Cascades Burn Ban in effect), picnic tables, vault toilets, and bear-resistant food storage boxes
Butts-in-boats launch time: September 3rd 9:00 am at Colonial Creek boat launch.
Miscellaneous Trip Details
Cell phones and radios don't work, so unless you have a satellite communication device, there is none.
Bring drinking water and/or water-treatment system.
Costs: $25 per person for camping. $45 +driver tip (cash) per person with boat for truck portage between Diablo and Ross Lakes each way. Daily parking at Colonial Creek Boat launch is free, but this may have changed recently.
